‘Will it be gone or will it be hidden beneath the display?’ – That’s the question leaving everyone puzzled when it comes to the positioning of Apple’s Touch ID sensor on the upcoming iPhone. We have seen plenty of rumors hinting at the possibility of the sensor placed at the rear panel of the smartphone or underneath the display. However, the latest information suggests that Apple is instead working on a third option that could both allow it to thin down on the bezels on the rumored iPhone 8.

Apple has been granted a new patent, titled ‘Finger biometric sensor assembly including direct bonding interface and related methods,’ which illustrates an edge-to-edge screen iPhone with a thin Touch ID sensor placed right in the power button on the top of the smartphone. Such a system would allow for a seamless display on the anticipated iPhone and make authentication easier for the users. The patent describes the technology as the one where users only need to place the finger on the power button for authentication.

One of the features which would differentiate the authentication process will involve rolling fingers over the sensor instead of just laying the finger on it. This is due to the sheer thinness of the sensor. The patent further notes that the ‘sensor assembly cooperates with the processor to perform at least one of a finger biometric enrollment and authentication function.’ ALSO READ: Apple iPhone 8 rumor roundup

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Apple iPhone and there have been widespread rumors about the company launching not one but three new iPhone models including iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus (upgrades to the existing iPhone 7 lineup) and a special edition iPhone 8 model which will boast a radical new design and have top-end features.

The iPhone 8 is expected to feature Samsung Galaxy S8-like edge-to-edge display and a glass sandwich design. The iPhone 8 dual camera module will likely be placed vertical, compared to horizontal placement on the iPhone 7 Plus. Other features such as wireless charging, 3D face camera, and a smart connector that will support augmented reality / virtual reality peripherals are also expected. ALSO READ: Apple iPhone 8 unlikely to have more than 3GB of RAM: Report
